Summary

An 18th-century castle of the Bánffy de Losoncz family at Nușfalău, Sălaj County, listed as a historic monument together with its park. After years of decay and changes of use, it was restored under the Attractive Romania programme with PNRR funding and reopened to visitors in September 2026.

History

The Bánffy family held land at Nușfalău as early as 1372, when the estate belonged to János Gönyüi; it later passed to his daughter Anna and, through her marriage to Dénes Losonci, to the Losonci Bánffy family, and the village became the centre of a large Bánffy domain. The present castle is dated to the 18th century, most likely its second half, and the commune's Wikipedia page puts it at the end of that century. Over the following years it deteriorated and changed use several times. The LMI entry, at Str. Banffy Baro Ianos 3, covers the castle and its park, and Monumente Uitate listed it as having no current function. It was restored under the Attractive Romania programme with PNRR funding and reopened to visitors around 9 September 2026.
