Summary

The former Boncza manor at Ciucea, home of the poet Endre Ady's wife Csinszka and later of the poet Octavian Goga, who is buried in a mausoleum on the grounds. It is a county-owned memorial museum, currently closed for a large EU-funded restoration.

Legal status

Donated to the state by Veturia Goga in 1966; heirs' lawsuit ended in 2017 in favour of Cluj County Council; land-registry re-registration was still pending then ↗

History

Miklós Boncza built the castle in the late 19th century. Berta Boncza (Csinszka), raised there, married Endre Ady in 1914 and they lived there in 1915-1917. After Ady's death in 1919, Berta sold the estate to Octavian Goga for 280,000 crowns (deed signed October 1920). Goga had the heavily damaged castle raised by a storey and rebuilt in a Brâncovenesc style in 1921-1926. After his death in 1938 his widow Veturia built a mausoleum (plan by G. M. Cantacuzino) and founded a convent in the former Reformed church, and in 1966 donated the complex to the state; the museum opened in 1967. Goga's heirs contested the donation, and in 2017 the Cluj County Council won the case after about 12 years. A 80.5 million lei rehabilitation of the buildings, park and fence began in September 2026.
