Summary

A hunting castle in Gheghie (Aușeu commune, Bihor County) built in 1860 by the Zichy family and converted to a hunting lodge in 1904. After nationalisation it was a preventorium until 2006; in February 2026 it was advertised for sale at 1 million EUR with about 10 ha, according to a press report on a sale listing.

Legal status

Inheritance of the Mateescu estate still contested among his relatives in 2012 ↗

History

Count Domokos Zichy built the castle in 1860; in 1904 Ödön Zichy converted it into a hunting lodge. The Zichys were forced to sell in 1918 to the Wallachian boyar Gheorghe Mateescu, an oil investor who funded a village school and church land. Mateescu died in 1952. After nationalisation the building was emptied and looted, and it served as a preventorium (tuberculosis sanatorium) until 2006, from 1950 according to Castle in Transylvania and from 1956 according to Romanian Wikipedia. The inheritance among Mateescu's relatives was still contested in 2012. The castle is a listed monument. According to a G4Media report on a sale listing, it was advertised in February 2026 for 1 million EUR.
