Summary

A neo-Gothic aristocratic palace on Bulevardul I.C. Brătianu in central Bucharest, built in 1833-1835 for Costache Suțu. Since 1959 it has housed the Bucharest Municipality Museum.

Legal status

Sold by the last Suțu relatives between the wars; assigned to the city museum on 10 December 1956 ↗

History

Postelnic Costache Suțu had the palace built in 1833-1835 to plans by the Viennese architects Conrad Schwink and Johann Veit. Around 1862 the sculptor Karl Storck remodelled the interior, adding a monumental staircase and a large Murano mirror, and the palace became a centre of Bucharest balls. During World War I it was the residence of the German governor. Between the wars the last relatives sold it, and it was contested among three claimants, including Banca Chrissoveloni and CEC. It was restored in 1956-1958 and opened as a museum in 1959.
