History
Barbu Știrbei commissioned the palace around 1835 from the French architect Michel Sanjouand, and it served as his princely residence in 1849-1856. After 1869 his sons added stables and outbuildings, and architect Friedrich Hartmann remodelled it from 1881, adding a storey, a northeast tower, caryatids and a semicircular carriage-house wing. The communist state confiscated it and from 1954 to 1994 it housed art museums. It was restituted to the Știrbei heirs, who sold it in 2005 to a private businessman for about 11 million EUR. The outbuildings were demolished in late 2008. In 2014 the Culture Ministry approved a mall behind the palace; after protests, an anti-corruption inquiry led to an abuse-of-office case, according to Economedia. Hagag Development bought it in 2019 for 10 million EUR, started works in October 2023 and plans to rebuild the carriage-house wing.
