A neo-Byzantine palace in Brașov, built in the early 1920s for Prince Barbu Știrbey and set in a large dendrological park. Nationalised and used as the Pioneers' Palace, it was restituted in 2005 and is now privately owned by a Brașov businessman's company and closed to the public.

Legal status

Nationalised 1948; restituted to the Știrbey heirs and sold in 2005; Brașov County Council contested the sale (2008, per Ziare.com); resold early 2019 ↗

History

Prince Barbu Știrbey bought the site in 1919 and had the existing gardens and houses demolished; the palace was built in the early 1920s to designs attributed to Mario Stoppa (dates given as 1920-1925, 1922 or 1927 depending on the source). Between the wars it hosted balls and the royal family, and after Știrbey's exile in 1930 it passed to King Carol II as a summer residence. It was nationalised in 1948 and became the Pioneers' Palace, and the grounds became a dendrological park used by the forestry faculty. It was restituted to the Știrbey heirs and sold in 2005, reportedly for 600,000 euros, to a company of a Brașov businessman; according to Ziare.com the county council later contested the sale, saying it had not been offered pre-emption. Part of the park was cleared for a helipad. In 2018-2019 the property was sold again, to Comprest for 19 million lei according to local press, and in 2024 urban planners proposed reopening it to the public.
