Summary

The former princely palace of Mihai Sturdza (ruler of Moldavia 1834-1849) on Cloșca Street 9 in Iași, extended in 1891 and used since 1893 by the theological seminary and, from 1993, by the Faculty of Orthodox Theology. A rehabilitation funded with state money was planned from 2020-2021.

History

Two side wings were added to the palace of Prince Mihai Sturdza in 1891. The 'Veniamin Costachi' Metropolitan Seminary moved in when works finished in 1893, and King Carol I visited in 1897. It served as a hospital in 1916-1918, was damaged in the 1940 earthquake and later hit by a Soviet air raid, and afterwards was given to a technical school. The Faculty of Orthodox Theology has used it since 1993. In 2020 the Metropolis of Moldavia and Bucovina announced an 80 million lei rehabilitation (76.1 million from the Government), and in 2021 the National Investment Company allocated about 46.4 million lei (nearly 10 million euro) for consolidation, assessed as seismic risk class I.
