History
The first, neoclassical palace was commissioned by Săndulache Sturdza from the Viennese architect Johann Freiwald and built in 1813-1814. Costache Sturdza had it rebuilt in neo-Gothic style by Johann Brandel in 1847-1855. Alexandru Ioan Cuza bought the mortgaged estate at auction in 1862, and his wife Elena furnished it from Paris; after his forced abdication in 1866 he leased it, and he was first buried here in 1873. The estate was later donated to the Caritatea hospital in Iași; the palace was a military hospital in the First World War and a railway tuberculosis hospital from 1936. Fighting in the Second World War left it almost entirely in ruins. It was rebuilt in 1967-1978 and the museum opened in 1982. A further restoration programme ran in 2008-2012.
