Summary

The oldest civil monument in Deva, a Renaissance residence at the foot of the citadel remodelled under Gabriel Bethlen (major modifications in 1614-1618) and given its Baroque look by the Haller family in the 18th century. It has housed the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilisation since 1938 (Wikipedia: 1882 for the county museum).

History

A court of the Deva castellan is mentioned in 1520, and the residence was used by Sigismund Báthory, Giorgio Basta, Stephen Bocskay and Gabriel Báthory. Gabriel Bethlen received it in 1608, and the building underwent major modifications in 1614-1618. Prince George I Rákóczi bought it in 1640 for 6,000 thalers. After 1687 it passed to Austrian fiscal administration and was leased out; in 1743 Ioan Haller, Governor of Transylvania, bought it for 60,000 forints from De Nicola. Haller and his wife Sofia Dániel turned it into a Baroque palace, with builder Conrad Hammer. The last restoration ran from 1997 to 2006.
