Summary

A Classicist castle in Mintia (Vețel commune, Hunedoara County) with a 17th-century core, remodelled in 1831-1834 by Count Lajos Gyulay. Returned to the Horváth-Tholdy family in 2007, it is partly renovated and used as a cultural centre, and is also marketed by Romania Sotheby's for 800,000 EUR (1,800 m², 6 ha).

Legal status

Nationalised after WWII; restitution claim filed 2001; returned to a member of the Horváth-Tholdy family in 2007 ↗

History

Ferenc Gyulay received the Mintia (Marosnémeti) estate around 1638 and building began about 1640, probably in Renaissance style. Count Lajos Gyulay rebuilt it in Classicist style in 1831-1834 and added a model farm and an English garden with a Roman stone collection. The castle was ransacked by insurgents in 1848-49 and repaired in 1851. The estate later passed through the Kuun and Kemény families, and Count Rudolf Horváth-Tholdy bought it in 1906. After nationalisation it served as a cooperative office, pub and shop and, from 1998, was occupied by the Gendarmerie. A member of the Horváth-Tholdy family filed a restitution claim in 2001 and regained the property in 2007; renovation has focused on the interior and the central risalit.
