Costea's Kula, Frăsinet
Cula lui Costea
sat Frăsinet; comuna Frăsinet, Teleorman · Str. Gării 72 bis, în centrul localității
Summary
A small three-storey defensive tower (kula) in Frăsinet, Teleorman, dating from the early 18th century and described as the smallest of Romania's kulas. Rebuilt in 1977-1978 after falling into ruin, it is again abandoned and in poor condition.
History
The kula dates from the early 18th century and is associated with the boyar Costea; in the early 19th century it belonged to the brothers Nicolae and Ioniță Bâțcoveanu. In 1878 its upper part with a small gallery was removed. It was burned in the 1907 peasant uprising and rebuilt. Abandoned and ruinous by the late 1960s, it was demolished in 1972 and reconstructed in 1977-1978 using original bricks, with a second floor and a gallery added. A neighbouring manor on the same land was nationalised and used as a collective farm headquarters. The kula is now out of use.
