Summary

A brick fortified dwelling (cula) of c. 1815 at Broșteni (Mehedinți), built by the panduri captain Ghiță Cuțui. Wrecked in 1916 and restored in the 1960s, it was recovered by the owners in 1990.

History

The cula was built around 1815 on the Motru floodplain by Ghiță Cuțui, a captain of panduri in Tudor Vladimirescu's army, with his son Constantin according to oral tradition. Legend links it to the abduction of his wife by Turks from Ada-Kaleh. German troops wrecked it in 1916 and it was abandoned. Attempts at restoration after 1930 failed. The state restored it in 1963-1968 (architects Iancu Atanasescu and Rodica Manciulescu), and it held an ethnographic museum. In 1990 the owners recovered the property.
