History

Corcova was the Mehedinți estate of the Bibescu family, who held over 2,000 hectares in the area. According to Gazeta de Sud, Prince Anton Bibescu built the manor, and he and Martha Bibescu used it as a summer retreat; the family planted noble vineyards around 1920. According to Wikipedia, Bibescu also had wine cellars built there. Nicolae Titulescu was received there, and Mihail Sebastian wrote his play Steaua fără nume at the estate. Ion Minulescu and Ion Pillat also visited. According to Wikipedia, the estate declined after a fire in 1907, the communists confiscated it in 1948, and it gradually fell into ruin and was run as a state agricultural enterprise. In 2015 the manor was reported to be in ruins, though a plaque still identified it as a historic monument. The heritage list dates it to the 19th century and gives its address as the seat of the former town hall.
