The Styrcea (Stîrcea) manor and its dendrological park at Văleni, Neamț County, a boyar estate restored between about 2008 and 2015 after restitution to a family heir. It was listed as a monument of local importance in 2018 and won awards at the national architecture biennale.
Legal status
Nationalised under communism; returned to a family heir after restitution ↗
History
The estate is linked to Ecaterina Styrcea Vâlceanca, a philanthropist who added a wing to the old manor, a clock tower to the village church and enclosure walls; her will was contested by distant relatives and upheld in court. Under communism the property was nationalised, its contents and library were dispersed or destroyed in the late 1940s, and the manor was later used by a school. After restitution to an heir of the family, living abroad, the school moved out. Restoration began around 2008 with the administrator's house; the manor itself took about six years, to a design by Șerban Sturdza (PRODID), and was completed in 2015. The ensemble of manor and dendrological park was listed as a monument of local importance in 2018, the first in Neamț County since 2004.
