Summary

A manor house in Zagon (Covasna County), dating from the 18th to 20th centuries and known after the Mikes and Szentkereszty families. Its present form comes from a 1903 reconstruction, and today it houses a museum with memorial statues and an adjoining former granary turned guest house.

History

The house belonged to the Mikes family and was later taken from them and passed to the Szentkereszty family, which gives the manor its double name. An inventory of 26 December 1716 describes an 18th-century stone house with a thatched roof, fenced with wood, whose main room, called the palace, had vaulted side rooms. Nineteenth-century photographs show two onion domes. In 1903 Baron Zsigmond Szentkereszty commissioned a reconstruction that kept the tall double roof but moved an enlarged porch to the centre of the main facade and added a wide central hall. After nationalisation the building passed into public hands. It now houses the Zagon museum with memorial statues of Kelemen Mikes, Vilmos Csutak and Manyi Kiss, while the old granary serves as a guest house.
