History
Aristide Caradja (1861-1955), a member of the Romanian Academy, built the house between 1890 and 1895 on family land and assembled a butterfly collection of over 110,000 specimens there. In 1944 he deposited the collection and library with the Antipa Museum in Bucharest. The house later served as a field hospital and was looted after 1949. Under communism it hosted the town hall, police, a maternity ward, library and post office. After 1990 the institutions left; in 2001 the estate was returned to three heirs who could not agree, and the building deteriorated.
