Summary
A U-shaped Renaissance and Classicist castle at the centre of Valea Crișului, about 6 km from Sfântu Gheorghe, built up over the 17th-19th centuries by the Kálnoky counts. After decades of neglect under nationalisation it returned to the family and is being renovated.
Legal status
Nationalised after WWII; reclaimed by a family descendant after 1990 ↗
History
A stone house built by Bálint Kálnoky stood here by the late 16th century and was later damaged by raids. Sámuel Kálnoky rebuilt and extended it in the 1670s. In the 18th century Count Antal Kálnoky pulled down the outer walls and reshaped it into a square courtyard castle. In the mid-19th century Counts Pál and Félix Kálnoky removed the west wing and chapel and built the north wing, giving the U shape; the main front visible today probably dates from the late 19th century. After nationalisation the castle served as offices, workshops, stores and a mill, losing most of its interior and its park. A descendant of the family reclaimed the estate after 1990 and renovation has been under way since.
