History
The Csáky family owned Surduc from 1641 to 1810, when it passed to the Jósika family. The novelist Miklós Jósika retired here after his first marriage failed, lived here from 1834 to 1853, built farm buildings and wrote the novel Abafi. The castle was damaged in 1848 and needed major works in the late 19th century. It passed to Leó Jósika and then to Baroness Irén Jósika (1853-1940). After nationalisation it became a tractor repair station and agricultural cooperative base; the heirs did not claim restitution. The company Agromec, founded in 1991, uses the castle and its land, and in September 2022 Sotheby's International Romania listed it for 560,000 EUR, with over 3,000 m² built area and over 4.5 ha.
