History

The Csernovics family received a noble title in 1720, and works on the residence began in 1724 under Mihai Csernovics and his son, probably finishing around 1745. Lazar Csernovics became a count in 1793, and in the 1840s Petru Csernovics brought exotic trees, including ginkgo, from the Near East. The estate later passed to the Károlyi family, and from 1862 György Károlyi added a second wing and a 30-metre tower. A physician bought the castle and park in 1939, and the state nationalised it in 1948. It then served as an orphanage, a home for the blind, a re-education centre and a cooperative's office. The Vasile Goldiș University of Arad has rented the castle and botanical garden since 1991 and uses it for conferences and a summer school.
