Summary
An eclectic castle in Șofronea near Arad, remodelled by Baron János Purgly; his granddaughter Magdolna married the later Hungarian regent Miklós Horthy. After decades as a state farm it was taken on in 1995 under a 99-year concession by a private foundation, which restored it and runs a thermal bath in the grounds.
Legal status
99-year concession granted in 1995 by the local authority, covering the building and a five-hectare park; improvements pass to the state at expiry ↗
History
An older core is dated to about 1789; the earliest documentary record is an 1889 estate exchange document. Baron János Purgly turned the old house into the present castle, and the estate passed to his son László. László's daughter Magdolna married Miklós Horthy in Arad in 1901. The communist state took the estate after 1949, László was deported to the Târgu Jiu camp, and the castle became a state farm and later a cooperative depot, falling into decay. In 1995 the Șofronea local authority granted a 99-year concession of the castle and a five-hectare park to the Humanitas Gura Popii foundation, which restored it with its own money and donations. The concessionaire's family lives in one wing, and a thermal bath and a small museum operate on the site.
