Summary

A manor of Hatman Theodor Balș in Darabani, dated 1837 by the heritage list. Today it houses the town library and the Muzeul Nordului.

History

Hatman Theodor Balș, owner of the Darabani estate, inaugurated the 24-room manor in Greek-influenced style; ro.wikipedia gives 1834, the heritage list 1837. From 1872 until 1885 the estate was run by his daughter Smaranda and her Greek husband George Cimara. Collection efforts for a local museum began in 1920 and a project in the manor was started in 1992, and the Muzeul Nordului finally opened there on 9 August 2014. The building now holds the town library, and the upper floor the Muzeul Nordului, with a local history and ethnography collection.
