History
The Otetelișanu boyars held land at Benești from before the village's first record in 1613. The manor was built around 1700 on the model of cula buildings with Brâncoveanu elements, and Barbu Otetelișanu founded the court church (also the family crypt) in 1746. Petrache Poenaru, inventor of the fountain pen, was born on the estate in 1799, and the manor was linked to Tudor Vladimirescu's 1821 movement. The manor was restored between the wars by architect Iancu Atănăsescu. The family lived there until nationalisation, after which it became a memorial museum that continued after 1989 until restitution. Between 2000 and 2003 one heir bought the shares of the others, reuniting the estate, and in 2013 the Otetelișanu Estate Foundation was set up.
