Sultănica Tower-House, Șuici
Cula Sultănica
sat Șuici; comuna Șuici, Argeș · 400
Summary
A late 18th-century two-storey fortified tower-house at Șuici (Argeș County), described as a foundation of the Brătianu family. It once housed an ethnographic museum but was badly damaged by earthquakes and needs urgent consolidation.
History
The oldest part, with thick walls and cylindrical vaults, dates from the 18th century; the south-east side was added later. The building has a cross-shaped plan, battlements and a torus-like exterior band. From 1971 to 1980 it held the ethnographic museum of the Topolog Valley. Earthquakes in 1940, 1977 and 1986 damaged it heavily; the load-bearing structure is described as compromised, the oak-shingle roof partly lost and the joinery missing. The current owner is not known.
