History

The cula was built as a fortified residence by the boyar Barbu Izvoranu in the 18th century (the museum page gives the late or second half of the century). Around 1802 Constantin Braboveanu added a floor, according to the museum page. In 1841 Radu Geblescu, who bought the estate, added a third level with a small turret gallery with trilobate arches; a wooden gallery was added in the early 20th century. The estate passed to his son Constantin, who gave the cula as a dowry to his daughter Elvira on her marriage to Filip Bibescu. According to Cule în Lumină the family stopped living there around 1940 and the state nationalised it in 1951; it then served as a grain and equipment depot of a state farm and was abandoned after 1990. Dolj County Council and Brabova commune carried out an EU-funded restoration (POR 2014-2020). A 2026 regional article says it has been completely restored and is now a museum open to tourists. The Muzeul Olteniei lists it with visiting hours of Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-17:00.
