Summary
A two-storey brick manor in Bulbucata, Giurgiu County, built around 1920 by the landowner Dumitru Voinea for his daughter Constanța. After nationalisation it became an annex of the Pasteur Institute in Bucharest, where research animals are kept. It is a listed monument of local interest.
History
According to the monograph of Bulbucata commune, Dumitru Voinea, who had started as a shop boy in Bucharest, bought the whole Bulbucata-Velea estate and built the manor in 1920, with outbuildings and a turbine mill, as a dowry for his younger daughter Constanța (Tanța), who never married. The monument list dates the manor to 1921-1940. The brick building has two levels, a tiled roof and 30 rooms, among them two guest salons opening onto gazebo-type terraces, a library, nine bedrooms and four bathrooms. The estate, then held by Constanța Voinea, was expropriated under Decree 83/1949. After nationalisation the manor was used as an annex of the Pasteur Institute in Bucharest, where animals for research were raised, and the monograph says it still serves that purpose.
