Summary

An 18th-century manor in Dobric (Căianu Mic commune, Bistrița-Năsăud County), long held by the Mikes and later the Bornemissza families. It was looted in 1848, rebuilt after a fire around 1900, and has housed an Orthodox monastery since 1992.

Legal status

Nationalised after the Second World War; Orthodox nuns settled there in 1992, followed by a roughly nine-year dispute ↗

History

The Mikes family held Dobric (Nagydebrek) from 1649 and the manor was already a luxurious residence in the early 19th century. In 1848 it was attacked and looted, and was later restored by Benedek Mikes. Through the marriage of his daughter it passed to Count Károly Bornemissza, who inherited the estate in 1862. The manor burned in 1900 and the Bornemissza family rebuilt it over about two years. After Bornemissza's death in 1911 the estate passed to his former son-in-law, who sold it near the end of the Second World War; it was then nationalised. After 1949 the building served as a school, library, clinic and cinema. In 1992 Orthodox nuns moved in, and a legal dispute over the property with the local community lasted about nine years.
