Summary
A Baroque manor in Ciumbrud (Aiud municipality, Alba County), built around 1800 for the Kemény family. It later became part of the local wine school and is still used by an agricultural vocational school.
History
The Ciumbrud (Csombord) estate belonged in the 18th and 19th centuries to the Kemény family and the Reformed College of Aiud. The manor dates from around 1800 and is Baroque in style. In 1848-49 István Kemény, deputy prefect of Alba County, lived here, and on 8 January 1849 Axente Sever swore in his troops at Ciumbrud, on the frozen Mureș. The writer Mór Jókai stayed in Ciumbrud in 1853, and the mathematician Farkas Bolyai spent school holidays on the estate in his student years. A vintners' course was started on the estate in 1880, and in 1935 the Aiud college founded a wine school on land bought from Árpád Kemény. The school was nationalised in 1948 and continues as the Alexandru Borza agricultural vocational school, which uses the manor.
