History
The Csesztve estate had two castles: a small Baroque one completed in 1796 by Mihály Mikes (VI), and a large Classicist one built in the mid-19th century by Count János Mikes (IV). Romanian insurgents led by Simion Prodan ravaged the large castle in October 1848. János's nephew Árpád inherited the estate in 1880, and Mihály (VII), son of Kelemen, was the last owner before nationalisation in 1949. Under communism the castle housed an agricultural cooperative; it was looted after 1989 and restituted to a Mikes heir in the early 2000s. It now stands without function.
