Summary

A neoclassical mansion in Cernat (Covasna County) of the Damokos family. Since the 1970s it has housed the Haszmann Pál ethnographic museum and a folk school teaching woodcarving.

Legal status

Nationalised in 1949; handed over for cultural use in 1971-72 ↗

History

The Damokos family of Alsócsernáton owned the house, which was given its present neoclassical form in 1831 (the monuments list gives 1838). Earthquakes damaged it several times. The state nationalised it in 1949; it then served as a grain store, maternity home, workers' housing, a pig farm and a tractor station. In 1971-72 it was handed over for cultural use, and from 1973 it has held the museum and the Csernáton folk school. It was renovated in 1993-1994.
