Zichy Castle, Diosig
Castelul Zichy din Diosig
sat Diosig; comuna Diosig, Bihor · Str. Argeșului 13
Summary
An early-18th-century noble residence in Diosig (Bihor County) begun in 1701 and later owned by the Zichy family. After use as a viticulture school and agricultural office it was abandoned after 1989, then partly renovated with EU funds (about half a million euro).
History
Construction began in 1701, credited to Franz Johann Grunsfeld, and the building was renovated and extended in 1719. In 1810 the castle and its vineyard were bought by a member of the Zichy family from Bratislava. It remained a noble residence until 1920. From 1920 to 1965 it housed a school training viticulture specialists, and afterwards the county Agricultural House. It was abandoned after 1989. Later it was saved with European funds from the Hungary-Romania cross-border cooperation programme 2007-2013, about half a million euro, and a renovated wing is described as an exhibition centre.
