History

Satulung was a Teleki estate from the 18th century, and Mihály Teleki is credited with the first castle (a source gives 1711), possibly on the site of an older structure; the heritage list dates the present building to 1740-1780. By 1782 it was a ruin in the hands of his great-grandson Imre. It took its present form in 1891 under Count László Gyula Teleki, the largest landowner in the area, who kept a library of about 4,000 volumes there; an upper storey was added and the building was modernised around 1891-1897. He was buried at Satulung in 1936. About 1.7 billion old lei were invested by the state in partial renovation in 1997-1999. After two failed auctions, Satulung Local Council sold it in 1999 to a Maramureș businessman for 1.2 billion old lei. Hungarian Wikipedia says an entrepreneur later renovated it for use as a hotel.
