Summary

A Baroque manor of the Teleki counts at Coltău, built around 1740-1760 and famous as the place where Sándor Petőfi spent his honeymoon in September 1847. Renovated in 2018-2020 with EU funds, it is owned by the commune and runs as a Petőfi and Teleki museum open to visitors.

History

The Teleki family built the Baroque hunting lodge around 1740-1760; it was restored in 1821. Count Sándor Teleki (1821-1892), a 1848-49 colonel and memoirist, hosted Petőfi, who spent his honeymoon with Júlia Szendrey here in September 1847 and wrote many poems. The last family owner, János Teleki, sold the property in the 1930s and moved to Budapest. From 1943 it belonged to a pension fund. After 1945 it sheltered refugees, lost furniture and part of its structure, and served as a cooperative warehouse, kindergarten, school and, per Hungarian Wikipedia, a nightclub; a Petőfi memorial room opened in 1960. Renovation took place in 2018-2020 and a new Teleki-Petőfi exhibition was opened in October 2023.
