History

Tradition places a medieval monastery here, and the Barcsai and Kornis families probably raised an earlier castle around 1569. The Rhédey family settled in the 17th century, and an inscription dates their castle to 1663. László Rhédey and Ágnes Inczédy rebuilt it in 1807-1809, giving it its present appearance, and Countess Claudine Rhédey was born here. The Schuller family owned it before 1935, when it was acquired for public use. It housed the village school from 1948 to 2010. Restoration funded by the Ministry of Culture ran from 2009 to 2015, and the municipality owns it since 2014. Since 2016 it has hosted exhibitions, including the Mysteria Residentiae Rhedey show opened in 2019.
