Summary

A Baroque castle in the centre of Pâncota (Arad), finished in 1840 for Baron Jozef Dietrich and considered the most representative Arad-style Baroque building of its area. It has housed the town hall since renovation in 1967-1968, though Romanian Wikipedia now says it is privately owned.

Legal status

Nationalised after WWII ↗

History

Baron Jozef Dietrich bought the Pâncota domain from the Habsburgs in 1822 and the castle was completed in 1840. Franz Liszt gave a concert there and Mór Jókai visited. After Dietrich's death it passed through his daughter to her husband, the Polish prince Sukowski, whose debts and extravagance led to the sale of part of the estate. In 1920 the castle was given up to cover debts and taken over by merchants through a joint-stock company. After World War II it was nationalised. It was renovated in 1967-1968 and has served as the town hall since.
