Summary

A neoclassical country house of the first half of the 19th century in Șiria (Világos), Arad County. Since 1960 it has housed the Ioan Slavici and Emil Monția memorial museum.

History

The castle takes its name from the Bohuș family, associated with Baroness Antónia Szögyény-Bohuș, who is commemorated by a monument in the town. It was built in the first half of the 19th century as a single-block country house with 30 rooms. In August 1849 its library was the setting of the talks that preceded the surrender of the Hungarian army under Artúr Görgey to the Russian forces; a room displays relics of 1848-1849. It now serves as a museum devoted to the writer Ioan Slavici, born in Șiria, with a permanent exhibition on the composer Emil Monția.
