History

The Béldi family had a manor in Uzon from the 15th century. After Pál Béldi's fall and flight to the Ottomans, his estates were confiscated and in 1679 Prince Apafi granted part to Kelemen Mikes. The first documented rebuilding was in 1755 under Antal Mikes, as an inscription on the chapel shows, and buttresses were added after an earthquake in 1802. The castle was nationalised in 1949 from Emma Béldi, widow of Count Kelemen Mikes, and housed the county state-farm directorate, which made significant alterations in the 1970s. Restitution began in 1991 and the building was returned in 2004. Members of the Mikes family settled there and have renovated it for tourism; excavations in 2016-2018 found stove tiles and ceramics.
