Summary

A walled 18th-century boyar court in the centre of Tătărăștii de Sus (Teleorman County), built by the Bălăceanu family with a gate bell-tower, a chapel and a manor house of which only the cellar survives. Archaeological research in 2006 described it as a monumental but badly degraded ensemble whose bell-tower was in danger of collapse.

History

The village is first documented in 1538, and the Bălăceanu boyars appear there only late in the 18th century, through steward (șetrar) Ioniță Bălăceanu. The beginnings of the court are almost unknown, but it was certainly finished by Zoița Bălăceanu before 1798, when she buried her husband Anghelache Amiras in the village church. In 1817 she ceded ownership of the court to Ștefan Bellu on condition that he maintain it and pay her an annuity. The guardian's failure to meet these conditions led to a series of lawsuits with Zoița's heirs and to the decay and ruin of the residence. Parts of the corner towers were destroyed in the mid-20th century. Archaeological research was carried out in July 2006 for a restoration project that had stalled for lack of such data, and the report's follow-up is dated 2007.
