Summary
Palace built in 1698 by Constantin Brâncoveanu for his son Constantin, a key reference for Brâncovenesc architecture. Restored with EU funds in 2011-2015, it is now a museum of the Curtea Domnească National Museum Complex.
History
Constantin Brâncoveanu built the palace in 1698 on the Bucharest-Târgoviște-Craiova road for his son Constantin; the south-façade inscription names the postelnic Mihai the Younger Corbeanul as overseer. The palace is about 32 x 23 m, with a vaulted cellar, ground floor and an upper floor with a gallery and separate apartments for the ruler and the lady. The Saint Dumitru church in the neighbouring courtyard dates from 1683. The palace was devastated after Brâncoveanu's time and decayed badly, at one point losing its roof. Restoration began in 2011 with a European project and the complex opened on 29 November 2015, furnished with period pieces from the Târgoviște museum complex; none of the original objects survive.
