Summary

The Ghergani estate of the statesman Ion Ghica, a manor with a family chapel, park and enclosure wall in Răcari town, Dâmbovița County, dating from the second half of the 19th century. It was a cultural and political meeting place in its day and is now being restored by a descendant of the family.

History

The estate came to the Ghica family through the Văcărescu family. Ion Ghica made it his summer residence and a cultural and political centre visited by writers such as Vasile Alecsandri. The family chapel was built in 1869 and holds the tomb of Ion Ghica. A 1940 earthquake brought down a floor of the manor and the war delayed repairs. The family's lands and property were confiscated in 1945 and 1949; under communism the site served as a children's hospital and was otherwise largely neglected. The 1977 earthquake collapsed the chapel dome, which was rebuilt, but the fallen manor floor was not. A great-great-granddaughter of Ion Ghica is now working to restore the estate.
