Summary

The Marghiloman estate in Buzău: the French-style Villa Albatros (inaugurated 1896) with outbuildings in an English-style dendrological park. Associated with prime minister Alexandru Marghiloman, it has been rehabilitated in stages with public funds.

History

Villa Albatros, also called the Marghiloman Palace, was inaugurated in 1896 and the park was laid out around the same time to plans by the French architect Paul Gottereau, with the city architect coordinating the works. The estate also had staff housing, racing stables, a greenhouse and a laundry. It was the residence of Alexandru Marghiloman, who served as prime minister in 1918. Romanian Wikipedia says the buildings were abandoned in 1985. The park was redeveloped in the 1990s. A 2018 city council decision started rehabilitation of several buildings, and the villa itself was restored with EU funds of about 28 million lei, while the guest house, stables and gardener's house were rehabilitated from the city budget.
