Summary
A manor built in the 1880s at Copăceni, now part of the commune of 1 Decembrie near Bucharest, for the engineer George Emanuel Filipescu and attributed to the French architect Paul Gottereau. Filipescu gave it to Princess Marie, the future Queen Marie of Romania, as her first property; it has since been restored and operates as an events venue.
History
The manor at Copăceni was raised around 1880 as a country retreat for George Emanuel Filipescu, an engineer from a leading boyar family, on an estate he had inherited from Maria Filipescu. It is attributed to Paul Gottereau, who also designed Filipescu's town house on Calea Victoriei in Bucharest. Filipescu later donated the manor and its park to Princess Marie of Romania, who accepted the gift with some reluctance; it was her first property and became one of the homes she called her dream houses. She wrote about it in 1930, saying it had become hers. The house has since been restored, and is promoted as a venue for weddings and corporate events.
