Summary

A 17th-century manor in Racu (Csíkrákos), Harghita County, built by János Cserei and birthplace of the chronicler Mihály Cserei in 1667. It was altered in the 19th and 20th centuries but keeps its old room layout.

History

János Cserei built the manor between 1667 and 1674; a beam inscription carries the date 1672. The Transylvanian chronicler Mihály Cserei was born here on 21 October 1667. Zsuzsanna Cserei, the last of the family, died in 1712. The house was restored in 1851 and later modernised: the walls were raised, the shingle roof replaced with tiles and the openings enlarged, while the room layout was kept. A fresco on the exterior wall was lost during the rebuilding. According to a regional news source it is now privately owned and used for hospitality, opening only occasionally to groups.
