Bornemisza-Matskássy Manor, Popești
Conacul Bornemisza - Matskassy
sat Popești; comuna Baciu, Cluj · 155
Summary
The Bornemisza-Matskássy manor is the largest house in the village of Popești (Cluj County). It is dated 1804 in the heritage list; a commemorative inscription cited by a local guide gives 1802. Monumente Uitate records residential use.
History
According to a commemorative inscription described on welcometoromania.ro, the house was built in 1802 by Baroness Anna Bornemissa after the death of her husband, Major General Pál Matskási; the heritage list and a Cluj local-interest article give 1804. A wealthy man named Tischler Mór later bought the property and had it renovated around 1927, the lighter roof tiles from that work still being visible. The same guide says the original park in front of the house is gone, though masonry gate columns remain, and that later occupants considerably altered the building's original appearance. It has a large vaulted cellar and vaults in the rooms of half the building. The Cluj article describes it as owned by two families of the village, and Monumente Uitate lists its function as housing.
