Summary

The Balș-Ghica manor in Dumbrăveni, Suceava County, a boyar residence of the Balș family later inherited by the Ghica family. Restored by the commune in 2011-2012, it now houses a medico-social unit.

History

Grand treasurer Iordache Balș (1742-1812) owned the Dumbrăveni estate, where he had a manor house, and in 1801 he built the village church. His 1809 will asked his son Alexandru and the heirs to found a school in Dumbrăveni, which was never done. Several of his descendants are buried in the church courtyard. The estate remained associated with the Balș family into the 19th century, and a Balș boyar of Dumbrăveni is mentioned as an estate owner in Botoșani county records. According to a 2025 article, the manor passed from the Balș to the Ghica family; around 1900 Leon Ghica had running water, electricity and a spa-style bathing facility installed, and his nephew Matila Ghyka, who wrote about the estate in his book Curcubeie, looked after it until the interwar period. The commune restored it in 2011-2012, with funding from the government, the Ministry of Labour and Suceava County Council among others, and it now hosts a medico-social unit.
