History

The Konopi manor was besieged by rebel peasants in 1784 and rebuilt, then given a neoclassical form after 1800. The last well-known owner, Baron Kálmán Konopi (1880-1947), an engineer and agricultural researcher who developed 'Conop wheat', adopted his collaborator György Lengyel. The castle and its 556 ha estate were nationalised in 1948; afterwards it housed pioneer and student summer camps. It was returned to the heirs of the former owners in 2007. Heritage websites give differing accounts: one says it was placed under a concession with a private company that was to restore it; another says the owners cannot afford the renovation and that the castle can be bought. It is advertised for sale by Romania Sotheby's.
