Summary

The neo-Gothic/neo-Baroque Károlyi castle at the centre of Carei, rebuilt in 1893-1896 on a late-Baroque core of 1794 and set in a roughly 10-12 ha dendrological park. Owned and run by the Carei municipality, it houses the city museum, a library and a cultural centre, was restored with EU money in 2009-2012, and works on the ruined park annexes were contracted in 2026.

History

A fortress was begun here in 1482 by László Károlyi; Mihály Károlyi strengthened it in 1592. József Károlyi had the old castle demolished in 1794 and replaced it with a late-Baroque building, and in 1893-1896 Count István Károlyi had it remodelled by Arthur Meinig as a seven-towered neo-Gothic/neo-Baroque castle. In 1944 it served as a military hospital and in 1958 the city museum moved in. Its riding school was used as a cinema and disco and collapsed in the late 1990s, and was partly rebuilt. The castle itself was restored between 2009 and 2012 under the Regional Operational Programme. In February 2026 the city signed a RON 24.5 million works contract (project total RON 40.12 million incl. VAT) to restore two ruined servants' annexes and the water tower as an interactive children's exhibition centre, an events hall/cultural café and a viewpoint. The city pays about EUR 100,000 a year in running costs and counted over 40,000 visitors in 2015.
