History
The present castle was built in the second half of the 19th century, probably by Baron Daniel Bánffy (1812-1888), and appears on the military survey of 1869-1873. After his death in 1888 it went to his son Ernő under a 1895 partition. Baron Ferenc Bánffy, a cousin, bought the estate and castle on 28 September 1916 and moved to Borșa in 1919. Renovation work was carried out before and after Ferenc's death in 1938. After the Second World War it was nationalised from Ferenc's widow, served briefly as an agricultural school and a dispensary, and from 1957 housed a hospital for chronic mental illness. It is listed as a historic monument.
