Apafi Castle, Coștiui
Castelul Apafi din Coștiui · Apafi-kastély (Rónaszék)
sat Coștiui; comuna Rona de Sus, Maramureș · 85
Summary
A former hunting residence of the Apafi princes in Coștiui (Rona de Sus commune, Maramureș), dated 1689. It now houses a school; only the basement and one room of the original building survive.
History
The castle was built in 1689 as a hunting residence linked to Prince Mihai Apafi. Over time it was used as a prison and as a residence for the families that held the Coștiui salt mines. Subsequent alterations left only the basement and one room of the original building. In 1986 the caretakers walled up the entrance to the underground galleries, which had largely collapsed. Local legend speaks of a crypt of one of the founding counts and of convicts held in the cellar. Today the building houses the Coștiui primary and lower-secondary school.
