Summary
The house of Dincă Schileru (Scheleru, 1846-1918), the peasant-born parliamentarian from Gorj, in Bâlteni village. Listed as a historic monument and dated to the early 20th century, it is a timber-porched house with stained glass, built by Schileru. A 2014 press report called its state desperate; it is still lived in by his descendants.
History
Dincă Schileru lived in the house he built at Bâlteni; he is remembered locally as a peasant who became a member of parliament and as founder of the village school and church. The house he built combines classical-style columns, folk wood carving and Renaissance-style stained glass. It originally had three openwork wooden porches around the upper floor, once glazed with stained glass, of which only a few fragments survive upstairs; this gave it the nickname 'the glass house'. The monument list dates it to the early 20th century. A 2014 press report described the house as in a desperate state and at risk of disappearing, with no funds for restoration. It is used as a dwelling by his descendants.
