History

The house is an 18th-century monument built in the Transylvanian Baroque period, according to local press, and is listed in the LMI at Str. Joseni 447. It was a summer residence of the Hungarian noble Barcsay family, and Ziarul Unirea reports that it was burned, with its outbuildings, during the peasant uprising of Horea, Cloșca and Crișan, then renovated several times, and damaged again before the Union of 1918 when peasants targeted it because a Barcsay descendant still lived there. The family's lands and forests stayed with them until the agrarian reform of 1921-1927, and in 1923 the manor was sold to the Cioara commune administration, now Săliștea. After the communists took power, a two-storey block and a cultural hall were built close to it and the park shrank to a hedge. In September 2017 the work order was signed for its rehabilitation under the National Rural Development Programme: a contract of about 1.34 million lei excluding VAT with SC Axa Reconst SRL, keeping the town hall in the building and adding exhibition and tourist information spaces.
